E-Reader Future Has Hit the Comics!

E-Readers are here to stay. And, that means e-books are here to stay as well. As much as we boomers would like to protest, using excuses like "but I love the smell of a book" and "there's nothing like holding a book in my hand", we're no longer the target market.

It's a whole new world out there, and like it or not, it's time we embraced it. My husband has dragged me into it. Okay, not literally "dragged" me. More like nudged me in the current electronic world's general direction.

In our family, he was the first to purchase an iPhone. He expounded on all the cool applications and how easy they were to use and how easy they made his life.

Uh huh. I know what you're thinking. How could a phone make his life easier, right? I was thinking the same thing.

But, then he started showing me, because skeptic that I am, I started asking for proof.

Well, I wouldn't believe it at first, but he was right. Some of the applications he had were amazing. He had his e-mail right on his phone - send and receive. And, all of his mail folders were there too! Now that was slick! And they synced with his desktop at home.

Then, there was the Internet application. Safari. Well, that sold me right there. I could surf the Internet from my phone!!

And, don't get me started on the Facebook and MySpace applications that link directly to your pages and profiles so you can access your pages and update them as if you were sitting at your desktop.

Of course, I digress, another great application I downloaded? eReader! I can read books on my iPhone. How sweet is that?

Hey, Vicki, good for you! Congrats on getting familiar with and skilled on the latest gizmos.
I confess, I'm still languishing back in the dark ages. I have a cell phone but only use it for emergencies (like I'm running late) and don't even know my own number. Rather than a blackberry, I still carry my day planner that I got back in 1989. (At least they still make calendars for it.) And I'm not much for Twitter of Facebook. I guess I'd better get cracking (and get techno) if I don't want the world to pass me by. Thanks for the nudge!

Eileen, we all need a little nudge once in a while.

I too, used a planner for the longest time, until I got my iphone. Then, once I realized I could sync my calender on my desktop with my phone, I SAW THE LIGHT!!

I do have a Facebook account, but I refuse to join the tweeters and twitters. I just don't have that much time!

Whoohooo... eReaders! Glad they are around and that ebooks are here to stay since I have written 5 and published 4 anthology ebooks.

Love the fact that they are environmentally friendly and with the new eReaders so much easier to digest.

Thanks, Vicki!

Heidi, You're so welcome. The more people who use e-readers the more popular e-books will become. And, that's the best thing an author wants to hear!

I have to admit I'm not quite there yet--I still love the idea of a book and it's highly useful during my public speaking appearances. I've had ebooks created for me but haven't jumped on the e-book reader bandwagon. This time next year, I may be signing a different tune.

You have a point, Beverly, it's nice to have a book when you're making a public appearance and can sell it right there on the spot. That's why it's great to have print and electronic copies go hand in hand.

In my opinion it would be great if there were "kiosks" set up for customers to purchase e-books immediately as well. As authors, we can set up a laptop, a download button, and with a Paypal link can allow customers to access an e-copy right there. Why not have the best of both worlds?
